Internationally renowned voice teacher Gregory Lamar has helped to shape the voices and careers of singers for over thirty years. His masterful teaching and knowledge of the voice have inspired singers around the world. Mr. Lamar’s students have performed in all of the major houses and concert venues, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, Staatsoper Berlin, Bayerische Staatsoper München, Opéra Bastille, La Scala, Covent Garden, New National Theatre Tokyo, Carnegie Hall, Berliner Philharmonie, Wiener Musikverein, and the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.
Mr. Lamar is a regular guest voice teacher for the singers of the opera studio of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. For eleven years, he was a guest voice teacher for the singers of the opera studio of the Komische Oper in Berlin. He has been a regular guest vocal teacher at the Royal Danish Opera and Danish Actors Association, and also worked with the studio singers of the Staatsoper Nürnberg. Mr. Lamar has conducted masterclasses internationally, recently at The Glenn Gould School of Music (The Royal Conservatory, Toronto). He was a consultant for the opera division of Thea Dispeker Artists’ Management and collaborates regularly with other artists’ management agencies in the U.S. and Europe. He was the casting adviser for the Copenhagen Opera Festival and vocal consultant for Malmö Opera.
Mr. Lamar’s students perform in musical theater on Broadway, national and international tours, and in film and television. Many of his students are teaching at various conservatories and universities throughout the U.S. and Europe. Mr. Lamar has collaborated with noted voice specialists in working with injured voices and has conducted master classes in voice and speech for actors in the U.S. and Germany. He has been an adjudicator for various competitions, including the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition regional auditions. Mr. Lamar has been a member of the faculties of Montclair State University and New School University (the Actors’ Studio Drama School, MFA Program). He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at Brooklyn College and Vocal Masterclass Clinician at the CUNY Graduate Center. He maintains private voice studios in New York City and Berlin.
As a performer, Mr. Lamar was noted for his wide-ranging baritone, artistry and versatility in opera, oratorio and recital. He received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Georgia, Master of Music degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, and did postgraduate work at the Indiana University School of Music.
